I just read your essay. I think its brilliant. Makes me better understand the problems facing the world at the moment. Hello I've got annother book, which I would like to recommend. The book "Gegen Spieler" written by Britta Waldschmidt-Nelson outlines the lives of Martin Luther King and Malcolm X and gives the reader a clear view in both lives and their different methods of fighting for equality. From my point of view it is very interesstig to see the contrast between Martin Luther King and Malcolm X, and the way how Malcolm X changes his life and his point view. At the and of the book you will see that Malcolm X was not as violent as he was called, so that you will get a different image of Malcolm. The ISBN# is 3-596-14662-3 (it's in German!!!) Your website was extremely helpful in some research I was doing, I ecspecially liked the information concerning Malcolm X, however, I found it quite disturbing that you never mentioned the white people who helped the black society rise above the oppression experienced in King's and Malcolm's time. I'm white and I understand the error of my people's past actions and in no way respect the hatred, oppression, and racism people suffered because of mere color difference that exists between people's skin. I felt after reading your essay that you portrayed the opinion that there were no whites during that period in time who wanted to sincerely help the black and oppressed of the time. Some good examples of whites fighting to end oppression against the black people of America you may want to research are known as Freedom Summer and the Freedom Riders. I just wanted to make the point that you don't have to be black to believe that freedom, justice and respect should be given to ALL people. Thanks!

This is a beautiful thing you got here with Malcom and his family along with the life he led. Listen, I copied the pictures of your site of Malcom into a seperate folder, I did this so that in case this site ever crashed and or if you dropped it, I would still have his pictures. I loved your essay on the comparison between Malcolm X and Martin Luther King Jr, and your insightful recount of the Afro-American History. For me however, there is no comparison between King and "Hajj Malix", X is by far grander, by far more discerning and valiant that King, by far more honorable and incorruptible. A man who was so great that King felt belittled by comparison. It is probably why he never dared to face X, because he must've known in his heart that he was a never a match to the "Hajj". It is also why I believe there's an American national day marked for King, but never for Malcolm X. I once read: "only the good die young", and since X was definitely a better man than King, God chose to take him three years sooner, to the dismay of all the people who also believe in justice and freedom. I am an American author. I stumbled upon your web site while searching for information on African-American naming conventions and practices. I'm currently writing a book about a specific family - born in slavery - who went on to be influential educators. I am fascinated that a German citizen finds Malcolm X so fascinating! Of course, he was influential during our tumultuous 60s, but he did not represent the views of the overwhelming majority of black Americans. Many viewed him as devisive. By the way ... I lived in the Detroit, Michigan area during the 1968 riots and remember - first hand - what it was like to be caught in the caldron of racial hatred. Perhaps I can offer some new perspectives for you to consider. Best of luck in oyur studies.

Hi, Elke. Your website is amazing. i just finished reading second book a bout El- Hajj Malik El-Shabazz. The autobiography he wrote along with Haley. It inspired me a lot and taught me a lot about how a person with a background made such a difference in the world. It still boggles my mind that how narrowminded the views of Americans are still this day. Ellija Muhammod is not the messenger of Allah. Muhammed was the last messenger of Allah. Islam is a beautiful religion and even though i am not a muslim, i firmly believe that the path Malcom X took towards the end of his short life was gracefully planned by Allah. His visits beyond the States broadned his horizons towards being a true Muslim and everyone should understand that he died for a good reason beyond what Nation of Islam would have you believe or anybody else. In my opinion he did the right thing and i would have done the same thing....

3yrs ago i just learned who Malcolm X is and what he stand for I guess you can say i was blind in all aspects, but after I read the Autobiography of Malcolm X by Alex Haley I was mesmerized and astounded at how much he loved his people and how he taught self-help. I came across your web-site accidentally, just looking for anything on Malcolm X and came across all this information. Just for the record im not a student, this is for my own knowledege. I've offten herd a lot of negitivity about this great man and now that I've learned who he is I've him in the catagory of a modern day Jesus because if know the works of Jesus and compare those same works to Malcolm you'll see that they are the same. I received your email. When I stated that you didn't understand the significance of Malcolm, I can answer that statement in the following way: 1. Malcolm influenced African Americans to the true concept of Islam 2. The number of Muslims that exist in abundance, is a result of his advocacy 3. He was a spark for most black revolutionary movements in the US (black panther party, republic of new Africa, etc.) The answer to your second question, "How long have you studied Malcolm X," I am 50 years old, I have studied Malcolm's speeches and have read many books about his life since I was an adolescent. As a teenager in the sixties, the Black Student Union in my high school tried unsuccessfully to have our school name changed to Malcolm X high school. In one of our programs that we held in memory of Malcolm we instrumental in having his wife Betty Shabazz attend. We received threatening phone calls to our school from people who said that they were from the NOI. For me and other Black men Malcolm wasn't just a quick study for us but he was our manhood and much more than just a hero. Those of us who have to live in the belly of the beast(amerikkka) understand his significance. You stated that you wrote your articles ten years ago. However, once you write a book, magazine or on the Internet, it almost becomes permanent unless it is changed or updated. thank you, jamal shakur

I came across your web site while cruising the internet . It was suprisingly informative. I was amazed that in 2002 , you don't understand the significance of el hajj malik shabazz. Two good books for you to read is "The Judas Factor -The Plot to Kill Malcolm X" and "The Messenger", both by Karl Evanz. In your Faq you stated you didn't know if he was a hero , of course he was a hero! He died in the cause of Allah and is considered a shaheed (martyr) in islam. Contrary to want you believe Malcolm developed his own consciousness in prison . His corrupted teachings of Islam were supplemented by knowledge that he reserched and added to elijah muhammed's crazy theories. Before Malcolm you could get all the members of NOI into a station wagon. He recruited more converts than anyone else and added money to the NOI coffers. As it turns out the tragic death of Lisa Lopes has touched me particularly deeply as she was what I could definitely call my main "muse" and someone I felt that I could easily identify with. She was the one who got me interested in writing poetry. I'm mainly a guitarist who usually doesn't have much to say. Elma would never believe that statement though as my longest letter to her was 23 double sided pages! Maybe there's something about Geminis that makes me want to express my self in words. They are really into communication--also one of the reasons I wrote to Lisa Lopes and provided my phone number. My mother called to tell me the sad news about Lisa at 10:30 AM. While several times fighting back the tears as she prepared me, she said "Little Left Eye was in an automobile accident and she died." I didn't hit me extremely hard until I saw the words go across the screen on MTV shortly after. My mom really liked her a lot as well (and also a Gemini) and was very sympathetic towards her. Lisa Lopes shared the same birthdate as Elma--5/27. She died nine years to the exact day that she called me on the phone--and the day before Tionne's birthday which is especially sad for her. The call was in response to the first fan letter/poem that I'd sent her. She must've liked it. Unfortunately I was washing my hair at the time and was expecting a friend of mine--John to call about playing at a blues jam that night; I'm a lead guitarist. As I knew my letter would reach Pebble's office that day I remember thinking 'Could that be Left Eye? No, that's John.' and asked my step dad to ask who it was and tell them I'd call them back. At that point he had never heard of Left Eye or TLC for that matter. When he told me that it was Left Eye and she had said she would call back I was completely blown away of course. To make a potentially very long story short, I never heard from her though I a few hours later a lady named Denise called from Pebble's office. I have the feeling she was the same person that helped Rozonda find her birth father. Anyway, she said that Left Eye had called earlier and had left town right away but she was planning on calling me back and sending me something. I asked about a riot at a TLC concert that had just recently happened at Magic Mountain amusement park in California. (BTW how was your time in Davis, CA? I once gave you the URL to a cool radio station there to help you find out what was going on in that area before you arrived) She told me that it wasn't TLC's fault that the promotor had sold too many tickets or something like that. I guess some people with tickets couldn't get in and the riot broke out. She also said the mail was brought in while Lisa was there and when told that she had a fan letter & asked if she wanted to read it, she said "Sure." That's about all we said as this lady seemed like the very efficient, corporate type and athough she was very nice I didn't want to tie up her time. While I'm writing this I just thought that I should share my memorial/tribute poem for Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes--a troubled though very bright, creative, inspirational and kind hearted person whom I will deeply miss. Dear Elke, Your essay is very impressive. It is extremely well written (I am an ESL community college teacher) and the information gives a very helpful sumation and analysis of not only these two personalities but the problems facing the US today. In many ways capitalism is the basis for these problems yet I would never suggest that socialism as practiced in the communist world is a solution which is beneficial to the underclass. As I was told by a young Chinese guide in China, "Communism is fine in theory but not in practice." I don't know what the answer is. The gap between the wealthy and the poor grows greater every day in the U.S. People are extremely selfish and interested only in issues which affect them personally. I don't know how one makes people more altruistic and willing to help everyone achieve a meaningful educational and econmic level in life. However, I see a great need for this. Unless you are a genius you do not have the answers to these problems either. However, just as Malcom X said that blacks must first recognize their situation I feel that we Americans and others in the world who have benefitted from education and a modicum of social class must recognize this problem and the moral and social issues which arise from its existence. Hello, Ms. Moritz. First, let me say that I do not intend to cause any offense against you, and I really think your page is nice. On the other hand, it makes me feel sad to see that this site is made by a German (I do believe you are German, right?) No offense to you, but it hurts that I can't find an African-American website on Malcolm X, who is my hero. I am an African-American female who believes in everything that Malcolm X preached. Not saying that if he were alive he wouldn't approve of you, but I'm sure it would mean much more to him if there was an African-American praising him. I think that your website is very nice and very informative, and I think you should keep up the good work. Also, it hurts me to see that so many non-Black teenagers only visit the site to obtain information for a school report or something along those lines. That takes away the purpose and the whole being of Malcolm X. He did not do what he did to be regarded as just another textbook character, such as George Washington or Abraham Lincoln. He was much more than that, and I feel that you should feel slightly angry at the fact that people are degrading someone who you admire as a simple grade. It's nice that they find this site informative for the research they need to know, but do they really care? If you watch the movie and read other material of his, as I am sure you have, you will see that Malcolm X regards non-African-American people who respect him as simple objects of degradation. Think about it. P.S- I would also like it if you would refrain from calling us Afro-American unless you are talking about a certain time perios. Thank you.
