News: Mailing list, Song contest
Song contest
12.12.2004
There is a definitive lack of some cool music on the Games Knoppix. So I decided to spent
space for 4 Songs on each following release for some music tracks. Since it's not
possible to include commercial tracks, there will be a little contest. When you're a
band and one of your tracks shall on the next Games Knoppix release here are the rules:
- Produce a song.
- Put your song under the
Creative Commons Licence. In the linked dialogue, you may modify 'Allow commercial
uses of your work?' and 'Allow modifications of your work?'. Save the resulting URL
with your licence.
- Encode your song into the .ogg-format with oggenc or audacity (both are included in the Games
Knoppix). We won't accept .mp3 files (bad licence).
- Write an email to
our OTRS where you tell me your band name, the licence URL and the uploaded file name.
- Upload your file using the dialogue below.
You'll receive an email when our jury decides that your music is kewl (we'll do a test party ;).

Hardware requirements wrong
08.12.2004
I got some reports that the RAM requirements mentioned are wrong. It
is possible to use Nvidia or ATI hardware acceleration and play some
games with only 256 MB RAM. I'm sorry for the misleading values.
So this is the new minimum RAM requirement (updated in release news).
Games Knoppix now available via ftp
07.12.2004
In addition to Bittorrent you may download the Games Knoppix now via ftp and http . Many thanks to the network group of RHRK.
Games Knoppix released
06.12.2004
Finally, the first release of the Games Knoppix (St. Nicholas Day
Release) is ready for download.
Please use this link
to get to the Bittorrent page.
The following games have been lately added:
- Castle-Combat
- Globulation 2
- Hatman
- Kobodeluxe
- Miniracer
- Pingus
- Rafkill
- Lots of small games
If there is a graphic card with possible acceleration detected, you
will be asked whether you want to use the Nvidia/ATI drivers. To
use this option, you need at least 256 MB RAM.
The joystick configuration tool is startet via 'joystick-config'
inside the console. We'll add a small HOWTO about how to turn your
Linux box into a game console soon. ;)
I want to kindly thank the following people:
- Klaus Knopper for building the Knoppix and his technical and mental support.
- Erik Auerswald (wrote the 'joystick-config' tool and made joystick patches for some games).
- Helge König and Barbara Herr for hours of beta-testing.
- Peter Drews-Walkling for suggestions concerning the hardware acceleration script.
- Agnieszka Czajkowska for the background graphics (she's not guilty for the freaky-looking penguin, that was my work).
- The members of the Unix-AG for their support.
Legal issues ( Germany only):
- In Germany, you're not allowed to give this ISO to people
under age of 18. Additionally, it's not allowed to distribute this
piece of software on CD-ROM's or other physical media. You will get
problems with the USK. You have been
warned.
- I'll give no guarantee that anything on the Games Knoppix is
working. It may even be that your city is invaded by aliens or worse
soon after using this Knoppix but I won't take responsibility.
My public key for verification of the signed checksums can be downloaded
here.

First release of the Games Knoppix
22.11.2004
After receiving a lot of positive feedback concerning the
Knoppix PCGH-Edition
we decided to build a public games version. This version is a true
Knoppix and I'll
try to sync the releases with Klaus Knopper in a way that the base of the
Games Knoppix is the most current public Knoppix.
The date of our first release will be Monday, the 6.12.2004
(St. Nicholas Day ;). At first, the Games Knoppix will be downloadable only
via the Bittorrent page
of the
Unix-AG TU-Kaiserlautern which is kindly providing the infrastructure
for this project.
Until then, this site will be updated regularly with news concerning
the features of the games version.
