Sanchez, Sonia

An American poet, playwright, editor, and author of children's
books, Sonia Sanchez, b. Birmingham, Ala., Sept. 9, 1934, is best
known for her angry poetry and deeply felt black pride. "Each one
of us was the finished product of an American dream, nightmarish
in concept and execution," is her summation of growing up black
in the United States. She is also a powerful spokeswoman for the
special identity of black women. Her volumes of poetry include
Home Coming (1969), We a BaddDDD People (1970), Love Poems
(1973), and Homegirls and Handgrenades (1984). Her play Sister
Son/ji was produced off Broadway in 1972. She has also edited
short stories by black authors and written children's fiction.
