      {eb'-uh-nee}

      Ebony is a general illustrated magazine for black Americans.
      Begun in Chicago in 1945 by John H. Johnson, later a black
      publishing leader, it was inspired by Life, the photojournalism
      magazine, and is similar in size and plan. Its opinions on
      racial issues are moderate, and circulation is around 1,800,000.
